Escape from Alcatraz

Objective

Each team will be given time to write the program using Java Script Block Editor to control their own maker robot movement to Escape from Alcatraz as fast as possible with minimal penalties.


Category

There are TWO (2) categories:

  • Primary school category ( 10 – 12 years old )
  • Secondary school category ( 13 – 17 years old )


General Guidelines:

  • The competition is opened to all schools in Malaysia.
  • Participant may only participate in ONE (1) category.
  • Each team must has maximum TWO (2) participants only.
  • All rules and regulations are subject to change without prior notice.


General Rules - Escape from Alcatraz

[Regulation on material use]

  1. Participants must use BBC micro:bit platform for the competition.
  2. No other platform is allowed to be used in the competition.
  3. Only JavaScript Blocks Editor should be used during the competition.
  4. No Sensors are allowed for the competition.
  5. Team should prepare and bring all the necessary equipment (laptops, batteries, extension trailing socket, servo motors, battery holder, caster wheel, jumper, crocodile clips, tyres) for the competition. The organizer will not provide the equipment.


[Regulations on behavior (Safety first)]

Behaviors listed below are prohibited and may result in disqualification:

  1. For primary & secondary school categories, mentors are not allowed to enter the competition area.
  2. Teachers/Parents/Mentors are not allowed to give instruction or guidance to their teams during the competition.
  3. Causing damage to the competition playing fields, models or robots of other teams.
  4. Using dangerous items or displaying behavior that disrupt the competition.
  5. Using inappropriate words or behaving inappropriately towards other teams, audience, judges or the tournament.
  6. Creating situations which judges deem unacceptable or interfering.
  7. Penalty may be imposed on a team if there is any violation to the General Rules.
  8. The judges’ decisions are final and any objections with regards to the results will not be entertained


Rules & Regulations:

1. Teams

  • Each team must have one maker robot.
  • Each team must consist of two participants only.

2. Rule Clarification

  • The referee's decision is considered as final during game play.
  • Mentors must not be involved in any rules discussion.
  • Once the referee come to a decision, no more discussion will be entertained.

3. Robot Specifications

  • Construction and Programming of maker robots must be done exclusively by the students.
  • The maximum weight for the maker robot is 600 gram. Maker robot exceeding the maximum weight will be disqualified.
  • A maker robot shall not be larger either in length or in width, than 25 centimeters.
  • The hardware that will be used during the competition:
    • BBC micro:bit.
    • Maker Robot.
  • Maker robot requirement:
    • 2 x 6V 360 continuous servos or 2 x 6V DC motors & Motor driver.
    • 1 x Castor Wheel.
    • 4 x AA batteries/5V power bank.
    • 2 x AAA batteries.
    • Robot body –box/metal/plastic/wood/etc.

4. Robot Control

  • Robot must be controlled by programming only
  • Use push button to activate your robot.
  • The use of any remote control is not allowed.

 5. Games play

  • Each team will be given time to write the program after the actual competition maze is revealed.The competition maze will be revealed at 8.30am on the competition day.
  • Before the start of competition, each team is allowed to have unlimited practice on the actual competition maze. The maze will be closed for practice 10 minutes before the competition.
  • The Team will be disqualified if they are not ready for the competition. The competition will start at 2.30pm.
  • The competition consist of two (2) rounds. There are three (3) run for each round. For each run, the team is allowed to adjust starting position.
  • After round one (1) completed, the teams are allowed to fix their program/makers robot if needed before start of round two (2).
  • Each team will be given five (5) minutes to complete the round. If the team exceed five (5) minutes to complete the round, no points will be awarded.
  • Teams are not permitted to touch maker robots once the run has started . The team will be disqualified if they violent the rules.

6. Maze

  • The actual competition maze will be revealed at 8.30am on the competition day.

7. Scoring

  • Two (2) points will be deducted if maker robot touches the barrier.
  • Four (4) points will be deducted if maker robot touches the barrier more than 1 second.
  • If the makers robot jump/cross the barrier at any point in the maze during the run, that run will be disqualified.

8. Winner 

The winner will be determined based on the best run with following priorities:

  • Completing the maze.
  • The highest points.
  • The fastest run time.

what is bootcamp ?

Bootcamp is one day workshop for teachers and student for the competition preparation.

**Bootcamp will be held on 7th September 2018 at SMK Dato' Abu Bakar Baginda, Bangi.
